Cold Water Burns Fat

Cold Water Burns Fat

For a long time, drinking water has been thought to help with weight loss.

In fact, 30–59% of US adults who try to lose weight increase their water intake (1, 2).

Many studies show that drinking more water may benefit weight loss and maintenance (3).

We've partnered with WW (Weight Watchers Reimagined) to help you understand how drinking water can help you lose weight.

Drinking Water Can Make You Burn More Calories

Most of the studies listed below looked at the effect of drinking one, 0.5 liter (17 oz) serving of water.

Drinking water increases the amount of calories you burn, which is known as resting energy expenditure (4).

In adults, resting energy expenditure has been shown to increase by 24–30% within 10 minutes of drinking water. This lasts at least 60 minutes (5, 6).

Supporting this, one study of overweight and obese children found a 25% increase in resting energy expenditure after drinking cold water (7).

A study of overweight women examined the effects of increasing water intake to over 1 liter (34 oz) per day. They found that over a 12-month period, this resulted in an extra 2 kg (4.4 lbs) of weight loss (8).

Since these women didn't make any lifestyle changes except to drink more water, these results are very impressive.

Additionally, both of these studies indicate that drinking 0.5 liters (17 oz) of water results in an extra 23 calories burned. On a yearly basis, that sums up to roughly 17,000 calories — or over 2 kg (4.4 lbs) of fat.

Several other studies have monitored overweight people who drank 1-1.5 liters (34–50 oz) of water daily for a few weeks. They found a significant reduction in weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and body fat (8, 9, 10).

These results may be even more impressive when the water is cold. When you drink cold water, your body uses extra calories to warm the water up to body temperature.

You can track your water intake through the WW app. Doing so can help you meet your goals while staying hydrated.

Bottom Line:

Drinking 0.5 liters (17 oz) of water may increase the amount of calories burned for at least an hour. Some studies show that this can lead to modest weight loss.

Drinking Water Before Meals Can Reduce Appetite

Some people claim that drinking water before a meal reduces appetite.

There actually seems to be some truth behind this, but almost exclusively in middle-aged and older adults (11).

Studies of older adults have shown that drinking water before each meal may increase weight loss by 2 kg (4.4 lbs) over a 12-week period (4, 11).

In one study, middle-aged overweight and obese participants who drank water before each meal lost 44% more weight, compared to a group that did not drink more water (4).

Another study also showed that drinking water before breakfast reduced the amount of calories consumed during the meal by 13% (12).

Although this may be very beneficial for middle-aged and older people, studies of younger individuals have not shown the same impressive reduction in calorie intake.

Bottom Line:

Drinking water before meals may reduce appetite in middle-aged and older individuals. This decreases calorie intake, leading to weight loss.

Drinking More Water is Linked to Reduced Calorie Intake and a Lower Risk of Weight Gain

Since water is naturally calorie-free, it is generally linked with reduced calorie intake.

This is mainly because you then drink water instead of other beverages, which are often high in calories and sugar (13, 14, 15).

Observational studies have shown that people who drink mostly water have up to a 9% (or 200 calories) lower calorie intake, on average (16, 17).

Drinking water may also help prevent long-term weight gain. In general, the average person gains about 1.45 kg (3.2 lbs) every 4 years (18).

This amount may be reduced by:

  • Adding 1 cup of water: Increasing your daily water consumption by 1 cup may reduce this weight gain by 0.13 kg (0.23 lbs).
  • Replacing other drinks with water: Substituting a serving of a sugar-sweetened beverage with 1 cup of water may reduce the 4-year weight gain by 0.5 kg (1.1 lbs).

It is especially important to encourage children to drink water, as it can help prevent them from becoming overweight or obese (17, 3).

A recent, school-based study aimed to reduce obesity rates by encouraging children to drink water. They installed water fountains in 17 schools and provided classroom lessons about water consumption for 2nd and 3rd graders.

After one school year, the risk of obesity had been reduced by a whopping 31% in the schools where water intake was increased (19).

Bottom Line:

Drinking more water may lead to decreased calorie intake and reduce the risk of long-term weight gain and obesity, especially in children.

How Much Water Should You Drink?

Many health authorities recommend drinking eight, 8-oz glasses of water (about 2 liters) per day.

However, this number is completely random. As with so many things, water requirements depend entirely on the individual (20).

For example, people who sweat a lot or exercise regularly may need more water than those who are not very active.

Older people and breast-feeding mothers also need to monitor their water intake more closely (21).

Keep in mind that you also get water from many foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, meat, fish, milk, and especially fruits and vegetables.

As a good rule of thumb, you should always drink water when you're thirsty, and drink enough to quench your thirst.

If you find you have a headache, are in a bad mood, are constantly hungry or have trouble concentrating, then you may suffer from mild dehydration. Drinking more water may help fix this (22, 23, 24).

Based on the studies, drinking 1-2 liters of water per day should be sufficient to help with weight loss.

Here's how much water you should drink, in different measurements:

  • Liters: 1–2.
  • Ounces: 34–67.
  • Glasses (8-oz): 4–8.

However, this is just a general guideline. Some people may need less, while others may need a lot more.

Also, it is not recommended to drink too much water either, as it may cause water toxicity. This has even caused death in extreme cases, such as during water drinking contests.

Bottom Line:

According to the studies, 1–2 liters of water per day is enough to assist with weight loss, especially when consumed before meals.

Take Home Message

Water can be really helpful for weight loss.

It is 100% calorie-free, helps you burn more calories and may even suppress your appetite if consumed before meals.

The benefits are even greater when you replace sugary beverages with water. It is a very easy way to cut back on sugar and calories.

However, keep in mind that you're going to have to do a lot more than just drink water if you need to lose a significant amount of weight.

Water is just one, very small piece of the puzzle.

The Audi R8 is a mid-engine, 2-seater sports car,[2] [3] which uses Audi's trademark quattro permanent all-wheel drive system.[2] It was introduced by the German car manufacturer Audi AG in 2006.

The car is exclusively designed, developed, and manufactured by Audi AG's private subsidiary company manufacturing high performance automotive parts, Audi Sport GmbH (formerly quattro GmbH),[4] and is based on the Lamborghini Gallardo and presently the Huracán platform.[5] The fundamental construction of the R8 is based on the Audi Space Frame,[2] and uses an aluminium monocoque which is built using space frame principles. The car is built by Audi Sport GmbH in a newly renovated factory at Audi's 'aluminium site' at Neckarsulm in Germany.[2]

It is also the first production car with full-LED headlamps.[6]

First generation (2006–2015: Type 42) [edit]

The Audi R8, based on the Audi Le Mans quattro concept car (designed by Frank Lamberty and Julian Hoenig) first appeared at the 2003 International Geneva Motor Show and the 2003 Frankfurt International Motor Show. The R8 road car was officially launched at the Paris Auto Show on 30 September 2006. There was some confusion with the name, which the car shares with the 24 Hours of Le Mans winning R8 Le Mans Prototype (LMP). Initial models included the R8 4.2 FSI coupé (with a V8 engine) and R8 5.2 FSI coupé (with a V10 engine). Convertible models, called the Spyder by the manufacturer, were introduced in 2008, followed by the high-performance GT model introduced in 2011. The Motorsport variants of the R8 were also subsequently introduced from 2008 onwards. An all-electric version called the e-Tron started development but would only reach production stage when the second generation model would be introduced.

6-time 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Jacky Ickx described the R8 as "the best handling road car today".[7] [8] [9]

The car received a facelift in 2012 and a new model called the V10 Plus was now added to the range. Production of the Type 42 ended in August 2015.[10] [11] [12]

Second generation (2015–present: Type 4S) [edit]

The second generation of the R8 (model code: Type 4S) was unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show and is based on the Modular Sports System platform shared with the Lamborghini Huracan. The development of the Type 4S commenced in late 2013 and was completed in late 2014. Initial models included the all-electric e-Tron and the V10 5.2 FSI along with the V10 plus. Unlike its predecessor, there was no manual transmission available and the entry-level V8 trim was also dropped.[13] [14] In 2016, the convertible (Spyder) variant was added to the line up which was initially available in the base V10 trim. In mid-2017, the high performance V10 plus Spyder was added to the range. A rear-wheel-drive model called the R8 RWS was introduced.

In 2018, the R8 received a mid-cycle refresh with mechanical and exterior changes. The newer and more aggressive design language carried over from famous Audi models of the past and its appearance is slightly more angular up front. Some of the aerodynamic features such as the front aeroblades are shared with the Lamborghini Huracàn. The refreshed model had substantial performance improvements over its predecessor.[15] The base R8 gets a power boost from 532 hp to 562 hp, while the V10 Plus was renamed V10 Performance Quattro and the engine saw a power increase by 10 hp (7 kW), now up to 612 hp.[16]

The Audi R8 e-tron (2015) was an all-electric version of the second-generation R8. Unlike the earlier 2010 prototype based on the first-generation R8, it actually entered production, but only on a small scale, with less than 100 units sold. It featured a 92-kWh battery.

Production, available markets and sales [edit]

To produce the R8 at Audi Sport GmbH, 70 workers fit 5,000 different parts by hand. The factory at Neckarsulm, redeveloped at a cost of €28 million, usually produces between eight and fifteen cars a day, up to a maximum daily output of 29 cars.[2] Ninety-five lasers inspect the entire car in five seconds to ensure that over 220 measurements are within 0.1 millimetres of the programmed plans.[17]

Marvel Cinematic Universe [edit]

The R8 became the personal vehicle for Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr.) throughout six films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Type 42 models were used in the Iron Man Trilogy with a V8 in Iron Man,[31] a V10 Spyder in Iron Man 2,[32] and an e-tron prototype in Iron Man 3.[33] [34] Type 4S models appeared in later Marvel Studios movies with 2016 V10 Plus models in Avengers: Age of Ultron [35] and Captain America: Civil War [36] and a Spyder model in Spider-Man: Homecoming.[37]

Where to Donate Used Cars

Tanab/Shutterstock

One way to contribute to charities is by donating your car. There are many benefits of doing this, including being able to claim a tax deduction. Not only that, but you can support a number of important organizations. Donating your car is ideal for people that can't afford to give money to charities, and there are loads of worthy causes. But where can you donate your used car? Here are some great ideas.

Health and Wellbeing Foundations

There are some health conditions that cause significant damage to the lives of sufferers. Luckily, the USA has many foundations to help people, but they need regular donations. You can choose charities that support Aids, Cancer, Heart Disease and much more. There are loads of options available, and you can make a difference in someone's life. Car donations work by using the proceeds from auction or parts sales.

If you're looking for wellbeing organizations, there are many that support senior citizens, individuals with disabilities and mental health advocacy programs. There are also veteran charities which need regular car donations.

Environmental Causes

It's no surprise that fumes from your vehicle impact the environment, so why not make up for it? Donating your vehicle to an environmental organization means they can continue to work on conservation and global warming issues. Pollution from cars also causes damage to animals, and breeds such as tigers and elephants are in danger of extinction. Donating your vehicle can give these organizations the chance to fund breeding programs and ensure animals can live on. You can also donate to animal shelters and many other causes. It's important to give back, and you'll be able to find a cause you care about.

Faith-Based Charities

Our faith is sometimes the only thing that gives us hope and it's an important part of many peoples' lives. If you wish you could do more for your church, then donating your car could contribute to much-needed funds. There are many organizations including the Community Coalition for Haiti, Chabad Jewish Center, Children's Rescue Outreach International and Meals-On-Wheels. All these organizations offer vital services to individuals, including food, clothing, and shelter. Global disasters cause devastation to communities and can leave people homeless. Think about the disaster in New Orleans, the Thailand tsunami and the Haiti earthquake. Instead of scrapping your car, donate it and contribute to these causes.

Where Can You Donate?

The best thing about car donation is you can do it anywhere. There are options available in all states and you can choose an umbrella organization or donate straight to a charity. In most cases, all you need to do is offer your car for donation and the organization will arrange the rest. They tow your vehicle for free and take it at a convenient time, from a pre-arranged location. Donating your car is an easy process, and it saves you time. Yes, you could sell your car or exchange it for parts, but donating it makes a difference to someone's life.

Things to Know

If you're considering donating your car, then it's an easy process. Most organizations don't even need you to be present when they pick up the car, and they do all the work for you. The best thing is, even cars that don't work can be donated. Instead of scrapping your car, you can give it to a good cause and even claim a tax deduction. Donating your car is a winning situation for all parties involved. You get to do a good thing and avoid a chore, organizations get to sell your vehicle for money and the proceeds go to a worthy cause. Look online today or ask the charity you currently support if they accept car donations.

I was looking to purchase a Service Manual for my 2006 Nomad 1600G but all I can find is for the "D" model.
Anyone know the difference between the D & G models?

Called Kawasaki today and got my answer

UPDATE 7-11-11

I was disappointed that no one responded to my request, so after several days I called Kawasaki today and found that the only difference between the 2 models is the "G" is Fuel Injected and the "D" is a Carburetor.

Really?

I have a 2006 nomad Manufactured 10/05 its a g model electronic fuel injection (efi). My manuel says its for a 2005 d-1 model first edition printed 10/31/2004 and its for a EFI system not carbs. I read your first post and didn't know what the diffrence was. I didn't think any of the 1600 were carburated.

I have a D as well, and it is fuel injected as I think all 1600's are. I was always led to believe that the D was the green model, the G was the black. That's the only difference.

Just the messenger

I was only relaying what I was told from Customer Service at Kawasaki. I wanted to make sure I ordered the correct service manual.

All 1600's were fuel injected. Your previous information is wrong. I have the 04 Classic 1600 and my Husband has the 06 1600 Nomad with the service manual. The service manual applies to my Classic all the same. Again .... all 1600 Vulcan models are fuel injected. Search models to see that the letter is only a year difference or paint code difference.
